Why Might Your Permanent Retainer Need to Be Removed?

Posted on 4/10/2016 by Dr. Lovrovich
A young girl with a permanent retainer needing to be removed! You've been fitted with a permanent retainer, so it shouldn't ever need to be removed, right? In actuality, there are several reasons why your orthodontist might need to take off your permanent retainer, some good and some bad.

Tartar Buildup

The wires of your permanent retainer will be attached to the back of your teeth with cement, so there is a good chance that tartar can build up on these surfaces.

Once tartar hardens, it can damage the teeth and gums, so you should be sure to pay close attention to your dental hygiene when wearing one of these devices.

Retainer Damage

If you injure your mouth or bite into a hard food, you can cause your retainer to be damaged. You might not realize that it has detached initially until your teeth begin to move. That's why regular orthodontic appointments are so important - your dentist will make sure that your retainer is still in good shape.

You Are Experiencing Teeth Pain

A retainer is used to make sure your teeth don't move out of position, but if they do shift, the pressure that you experience could cause some pain. If you are suffering from a sore mouth, be sure to talk to your orthodontist about what could be going on in your mouth.

You've Graduated to a Removable Option

Permanent retainers aren't necessarily "permanent." Some patients have worn their devices for up to 20 years, and many teens wear them for several years until their jaw stops growing in the early 20s.

Fortunately, the time will come when you'll be told you've worn it for long enough and can switch to removable options to wear at night.

If it has been awhile since your orthodontist has inspected your permanent retainer, please contact our office today to set up an appointment.
