How Did My Teeth Become Unaligned?

Misaligned teeth, also known as malocclusion, can be frustrating. Even more so, patients are often unsure why they have teeth that are so out of alignment.

Misaligned teeth can affect your bite, your ability to chew or speak, they can cause jaw pain and even headaches. Your Orthodontist can advise you on the range of options available to correct the placement of your teeth.

Reasons for Misalignment in Your Teeth

There are a variety of reasons your teeth may be out of alignment, the most common include:
•  Teeth that do not have enough space and are therefore overcrowded.
•  Teeth that appear to have the correct overbite, but for one or two teeth, their positioning is placed in such a way that they cause an underbite.
•  Teeth that are positioned too far forward of an overbite.
•  Teeth that are positioned in an underbite.
•  Teeth that have a gap between the upper and lower front teeth forming what is known as an open bite.

Reasons for these misalignments can be due to:

•  Children using a pacifier for an extended amount of time, generally past age three.
•  Children continuing the use of a bottle for an extended amount of time, generally past age three.
•  Children sucking their thumbs during tooth development.
•  Impacted teeth, or teeth that do not come down correctly and then alter the course of surrounding teeth.
•  Patients who do not have enough space in their jaw for the teeth coming in, before their jaw has grown into a large enough size.
•  Patients who have suffered an impact injury.
•  Patients who engage in poor dental care, resulting in gum disease and atrophy in their bone mass.
•  Patients who have larger medical problems including cleft lip or palate and tumors in their mouth.
