Clear aligners offer an invisible option to braces. Clear aligners are similar to braces in that they use gentle force to guide the teeth to proper positioning, only they do so without the use of unsightly wires and brackets.

Clear aligners are made of a durable, sturdy plastic material that uses gradual movement to move the teeth into place. Clear aligners are 100 percent fabricated and customized to fit each individual patient. Generally speaking, many aligners will need to be made throughout the process, each one of which will gradually move the teeth closer to their final positioning.

The length of treatment with the clear aligner will depend on the severity of each individual case. However, every patient will be instructed to wear the aligner for at least 20 hours a day for maximum effectiveness. Additionally, the aligners will be changed on a three week basis, each one bringing the patient closer to the final desired positioning of teeth.

The overall treatment period will not typically exceed 6 months, where most treatments fall between a 3 week and 6 month period; of which is shorter than the treatment length for traditional braces.

Advantages of Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are an ideal orthodontic solution for those patients that desire a straighter and more aesthetically pleasing smile, but that has cosmetic concerns about the metals of traditional braces and even ceramic. The most commonly mentioned advantages of clear aligners are:

  • Clear aligners are much easier to keep clean than the traditional brace option.
  • Clear aligners offer a much more comfortable solution to patients that is guaranteed not to irritate or cause discomfort to the gums, cheeks, or tongue.
  • Clear aligners, because they are removable, make it easier to practice proper and effective oral hygiene such as brushing and flossing.
  • Clear aligners will not wear or grind the teeth as will traditional metal and ceramic braces.
