It may seem like today, orthodontic treatment is provided at a much younger age than when you were a child. This is due to the advancement in technology, enabling us to provide our youngest patients with early treatment which sets them up for a lifetime of optimal oral health. Early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase 1 treatment, helps to prevent issues from occurring with your child’s permanent teeth. It is typically offered around the age of 7, when your child’s mouth has developed enough that we can tell how his permanent teeth will be affected.

Examining with Baby Teeth

It might seem strange to bring your child in for an evaluation when he still has his baby teeth, but there are many things that we can determine by looking at his young mouth. If we determine that interceptive treatment, or treatment before his adult teeth begin to emerge will be beneficial, you could help your child have a much easier time with his adult teeth by allowing treatment. Some of the most common reasons we see young patients for orthodontic treatment include, issues with their bite, such as deep or cross bites; an overcrowded mouth that will not allow enough room for all permanent teeth to emerge; or teeth that are not coming in the right way, making smiling, talking, and chewing difficult. Each of these situations can be rectified with early orthodontic treatment.

What are the Benefits of Early Treatment?

There are many benefits that you and your child will realize as a result of having an early orthodontic evaluation. The most crucial benefit is the ability to be educated on what to expect in your child’s mouth. Wouldn’t you rather know what is emerging or what roadblocks you are going to face with your child’s oral health before it happens? Having this knowledge will enable you to plan accordingly for the future rather than finding out after a condition has occurred and treatment is crucial. You will then have time to decide what the right treatment plan will be for your child.

Another major benefit of early orthodontic treatment is the ability to eliminate the need for more invasive procedures in the future. When we are able to correct a child’s future bite, guiding the permanent teeth to the proper position, your child will not have the need for such invasive dental procedures in the future. In addition, properly aligned teeth are typically healthier, which can help your child to continue to have optimal oral health now and well into the future. The easier your child can reach every tooth in his mouth, the less tooth decay he will be subjected to as long as he practices proper oral hygiene habits.

Last, but certainly not least, is the ability to provide your child with greater self-esteem. We all know how difficult childhood and the teen years can be for any child. If there are defects with his mouth that are obvious to others, it can cause your child a great amount of distress. Even if the issues are not completely obvious to other children, your child will likely be more self-conscious and more reserved as a result of the issues that he knows that his teeth have.

Early orthodontic treatment is not scary for your child. We operate in a very friendly manner that makes children comfortable with the procedures. We educate both children and parents along the way and ensure that everyone is comfortable with what is occurring. If you are concerned about your child’s teeth, please contact us for an appointment and we will help you determine the necessary steps that need to be taken in order to ensure your child’s optimal oral health moving forward.
