Top Reasons to Wear your Retainer

We know that after you get your braces off there is a sense of relief. You finally are free from the dental appliances that restricted your diet and made you embarrassed to smile. Now that you are free, though, you will likely be given a retainer to wear. Many patients resist the need to wear this appliance, thinking that now that their teeth are straight, there is no reason to continue with any other appliances. The truth is, however, that you must wear this retainer if you want to keep that beautiful smile just as it is the day you got your braces off! If that is not enough of a reason, here are a few more.

Your Teeth can Still Move

Even though your teeth are looking beautiful and straight right now, they are not permanently in that spot. The new positioning of your teeth can be considered temporary if you do not provide the support of the retainer. Your braces did their job of moving the position of your teeth, working with the pliability of your jawbone, but your teeth are a creature of habit and will go back to their original position unless they are encouraged to do otherwise, which is what the retainer does. It will take a certain length of time to reformulate the permanent position of these teeth, of which we can tell when we evaluate your mouth. This is why we provide the retainer – it is not a lifetime sentence for dental appliances; it is a form of support for now.

We can Provide Different Types of Retainers

You do not have to worry about being embarrassed about your retainer; we have many options available to you. If you are thinking of the “old school” retainers with the pink base, you are not aware of all of the options we have at our disposal. We will take into consideration your preferences as well as what your teeth need in order to stay in proper position. A few of the choices we have at our disposal include clear retainers as well as those that are positioned on the backside of your teeth. Talk to us about your options before deciding that you are just not going to wear one.

The More you Wear it the sooner it will be Gone

The good news is that if you listen to us now and wear your retainer as suggested, you will eventually be able to get rid of it. If, on the other hand, you do not wear it as we suggest, you will be stuck with it for longer because your teeth will not permanently be in the new position. If you are having trouble wearing it during the times we told you would be necessary, talk to us so that we can provide you with a new schedule that works for you and your teeth. Just remember though, if you choose not to wear it, we will be unable to take it out of your treatment plan for the foreseeable future.

Retainers provide a valuable service to your teeth. If you went through the hard work of having braces, it makes sense to wear the retainer as suggested. If you are really resistant to the idea, make sure to talk to us so that we can provide the most plausible solution for you. Remember that retainers are not a permanent solution to your straight teeth – the more you wear them, the quicker they can be a thing of the past.
